I work as a freelancer, often alongside agencies, so I see both sides. Neither option is always better. The right choice depends on how big and complex your project is, how much you want to manage yourself and your budget.
Start with two questions
How complex is the project: one film, or a campaign with strategy, shoots, many versions and media buying? And how much time can you spend managing it yourself? The answers usually point clearly one way.
Why hire a freelancer
Cost. Freelancers have much lower overheads than agencies, so the same skill usually costs less. More of your budget goes into the work itself.
Direct contact. You talk to the person doing the work. Feedback is understood first-hand, and changes happen quickly.
Specialist skills. Many freelancers are deeply skilled in one area, such as motion graphics, AI video or editing, and you can choose exactly the specialist you need.
Flexibility. Freelancers can often adapt to your schedule, turn small jobs around quickly and scale down when you need less.
The drawbacks of a freelancer
Capacity. One person can only do so much. A large campaign with many deliverables may need several freelancers, and someone has to coordinate them.
Range. A motion designer may not also write strategy, direct a shoot and plan media. You may need to fill those gaps.
Availability. Illness or a clash with another project affects a freelancer more than a team. Ask how they handle cover.
Why hire an agency
Everything in one place. Strategy, creative, production, post-production and delivery are handled by one team and one contract.
Scale. Agencies can put several people on a project at once, which matters for tight deadlines and large campaigns.
Account management. Someone else manages schedules, suppliers and approvals, which saves your team a great deal of time.
The drawbacks of an agency
Cost. You pay for offices, account managers and margins as well as the work.
Distance. Your feedback passes through an account manager before it reaches the designer, which can slow things down and blur details.
Who does the work. The senior team who pitched may not be the people who make your film. Ask.
My recommendation
Hire an agency for large integrated campaigns where you need strategy and production handled together. Hire a freelancer when you know what you need, such as an explainer, a set of social videos, an AI film or an edit, and want quality and value with direct contact. Many brands do both: an agency for the big launch, and trusted freelancers for everything around it.
