12 steps to better video editing

By Salman Ravanan ·

Good editing is less about tricks and more about a reliable process. This is the workflow I follow on most projects, whatever the software. Follow it in order and your edits will be faster, cleaner and easier to change when feedback arrives.

1. Plan before you shoot

Know what the video is for, who will watch it and how long it should be. Write a script or a list of key moments. In the UAE, also check whether your locations need filming permits; arranging them late can delay the whole project.

2. Shoot for the edit

Record more than you think you need: extra seconds before and after each take, cutaways, wide and close shots, and clean room tone. Editors can only work with what was filmed.

3. Back up and import

Copy every card to two drives before you start, then import. Losing footage is the one mistake you cannot fix in the edit.

4. Organise your media

Create folders (bins) for footage, audio, music, graphics and exports, and name clips clearly. Ten minutes of organising saves hours of searching later.

5. Review and select

Watch everything once and mark the best takes. Most of what was shot will not be used, and choosing early keeps the edit focused.

6. Build the rough cut

Lay the story out in order, following the script or storyboard. Do not polish yet; get the structure right first.

7. Tighten the cut

Remove pauses, repeats and anything that does not move the story forward. Cut on action and on the beat of the music. Shorter is almost always better.

8. Use transitions sparingly

A straight cut is the right choice most of the time. Save dissolves and stylised transitions for changes of time, place or mood, so they mean something.

9. Add titles and graphics

Use text for names, key facts and calls to action, and keep it on screen long enough to read twice. Most social video is watched without sound, so add captions.

10. Mix the sound

Clean up dialogue, balance it against the music and add sound effects. Viewers forgive average pictures far more easily than bad audio.

11. Colour correct and grade

First correct exposure and white balance so the shots match, then apply a grade to set the mood.

12. Export for each platform

Export in the right format, resolution and aspect ratio for each placement: 16:9 for YouTube and websites, 9:16 for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, 1:1 or 4:5 for feeds. Watch the final file once, start to finish, before you send it.

These steps work in any editor. If you are choosing one, see my guide to the best video editing software for beginners and pros.
